I imagine that as a three year old in 1988, "Don't Worry, Be Happy" had to be a favorite song of mine. Thinking back, it feels like a song that was just always there. Not that I remember listening to it all the time, but when it played, I guess I just imagined that it was a song that was a lot older than 1988, than me. And although there was definitely a lot of cool stuff going on with music in the late '80s, this type of sunshine and rainbows music is absolutely what comes to mind, for me, when I think of the time. And that's probably all thanks to this song (and "Kokomo").
Knowing that the '90s were just around the corner, and with everything that came along with that decade, it's hard to believe that a song like "Don't Worry, Be Happy” could have been so popular in '88. As someone who worries a lot, I can report that it's not easy—not worrying, that is. I have to think that many people are in the same boat, especially with how these last few years have and are continuing to play out. But I do appreciate the reminder. Maybe it just feels good to be reminded of that sentiment. Maybe that's how the people of 1988 were feeling too.
