Listening to Emphatically No. made me simultaneously feel a little old but I also enormously related to a lot of Cheekface’s witty lyrics and overall sentiments. If these are the problems of today’s youth—where do I fit in? Their monotone vocal stylings suit their snarky lyrics pretty perfectly. Themes, to me, included a sense of apathy, but at the same time anxiety. On one hand, apathy for big things going down ("The climate changed and I left it on read"—what a great metaphor, btw) and on the other, panic at the idea of social interaction. I love their cover art, and Emphatically No. is hilariously candid not excluding real sincerity. I just wish I knew what the buttered bread (buttered side down) was a metaphor for?!
