NATE'S COMMENTS: "It is both 'loud' and 'heavy' without really being either of those things, which is interesting. Also, summer time is the time for volume."

ARTIST DETAILS

PRONOUNS: Robin Wattie is she/her/hers, Mathieu Ball is he/him/his, could not find for Tasy Hudson

ABOUT: BIG|BRAVE originally formed in 2012 in Montreal, Quebec. They currently consist of Robin Wattie on vocals and guitar, Mathieu Ball on guitar, and Tasy Hudson on drums. Louis-Alexandre Beauregard was the founding drummer, but left in 2018. The band originally played folk music, but an incident in which Wattie's acoustic guitar was broken left them experimenting with electric guitars, and the rest is history. Efrim Menuck of A Silver Mt. Zion was an early supporter, and produced their second album. They are currently touring with Spiritual Poison throughout North America (MilkBoy on August 17th!). Most of this information was gathered from an English translation of the French Wikipedia page.

DISCOGRAPHY: This is the most recent of seven albums. The debut album, Feral Verdure, was released in 2024. Still Life was released just last year.

WATCHING SOME SHIT: live at Supersonic Festival 2022

PREVIOUSLY ON RECORD CLUB: Last time that Nate picked a Canadian artist, we went through a lot of the Canada stuff in Record Club's history, so you can check out this section on Constantines' Sunday write-up page, and consider BIG|BRAVE an update. Another Canadian update, hot off the presses: A Chaos of Flowers is long-listed for the 2024 Polaris Prize, which is an annual Canadian award for Best Canadian Album. RC album Blame My Ex by the Beaches, as well as albums from RC alumni Ducks Ltd. and Kaytranada (part of the KAYTRAMINÉ duo), are all nominated.

How many metal albums have we done in Record Club so far? No drone metal specifically, but there was a stoner metal album (Purple), a nü-metal album (We Are Not Your Kind), an alternative metal album (Fallen), and... is that it? Homesick was metalcore, I don't know if that counts. In any case, I always wholeheartedly condone checking out different genres, so I'm excited to see what this one is all about.

RC CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK

Every week from now on, we're giving a quick re-listen to the RC album we covered five years ago exactly. Check out the quick reevaluation every Friday morning, before the regular reviews. Reevaluation, reflection, something like that.

WEEK 20: June 16-22, 2019
Years to Burn by Calexico and Iron & Wine

Happy listening, RC family!
Have a great week!
