Midnights, Sunny

What can I say? Midnights is good. It’s good! Could the entirety of the Billboard Top 10 be wrong? Of course not.

Stray thoughts:
  • Taylor Swift is clearly a cultural phenomena, a cult of personality larger than the music/entertainment she produces and has been producing for 15+ years. Even I, someone who has not engaged with the body of work at all, has been exposed numerous times from radio spots to TV spots to friends demanding to sing "Blank Space" publicly at parties spots.
  • Who's seen Amsterdam? While still DOR schlock, it's surprisingly enjoyable from the strength of acting of the lead and supporting ensemble. I bring this up because (minor spoilers) Tay Tay is in there at a cameo length around the same as De Niro's.
  • So I'm saying whether locally (ala RC) or globally (ala western music creation/consumption/criticism), my depth of knowledge feels so relatively shallow I'd rather alley-oop real album criticism over to the pros.
  • Black mirror idea: it's the DPRK, but instead of Kim it is Tay, and all the children are flipping her photo during the national parades etc. (happily), and the country exceeds South Korea's pop music exports in six months (suck it BTS).
  • How out of touch I am in thinking "isn't this a country music artist?" A real bit of realization was the RC intro pointing out this is an Antonoff joint and then hearing how much of that DNA in many of the songs paired with Swift's at this point legendary streak.
  • Which is why it's no surprise the album is as catchy and packaged as it is, an amazing display of being ultra-popular while simultaneously creating individual personal connections.
