"China Cat Sunflower," when it gets running, makes the most compelling case for the Grateful Dead as a band of concern and idolization as anything can on this minor work from a major legacy. On its own terms, it's a tight, fun, bouncy piece of psych-folk. As a stone in the pond, the band's obvious ripples are all over this song. The entire future of jam bands as a concept is born here, the snowball just starting to roll down the ski jump. This album also contains one of the worst longest songs I have ever laid ears to. Sometimes it makes sense, but mostly it makes sense if you're inclined to make it make sense.
