Listening to this pop punk album, I harken back to much of the pop punk we've listened to. Harken back to Free Throw. Harken back to Fall Out Boy. The album art does enough lifting on the second one.
It's maybe a bit unfair. Masterpiece Theatre does have enough variety in the album to give it a unique flavor. Tracks like "Celebrity Status," typical pop-punk, contrast tracks like "Masterpiece Theater I," with its heavy reverb opening. The duet track is cute with credit to Voegele's voice. In case you missed any of this intra-album variety, the band medleys it all together themselves with Mastapeece part 3, which, like a tech demo, is interesting if confusing.
Credit given, something about frontman Ramsay's timbre and presentation just doesn't click with me. It must be a personal problem. I can't point to anything wrong, just that these songs don't quite grip emotionally. Maybe I'm turned off by calling yourself a Masterpiece over and over. I don't know. Good on those who love this, I can see the unique value, but my pop punk tastes will remain elsewhere.
