This is something I've wanted to do all year, so I might as well just go ahead and do it before I run out of time.
As you may have noticed, not all beers are the same. There are dozens and dozens of styles of beers, and we spent maybe 1/7th of the years laboriously detailing as many as we could. A list (not the list, because an agreed-upon list doesn't exist) can be found HERE, with links to a description of each style. However, today I'd like to present it in a different fashion.
There are many different beer styles, but they can be categorized and subcategorized and organized in such a way. Here is my attempt at making a flow chart, organizing the different beer types. It's crude, but hopefully it gives you a good understanding of how to "define" a beer.

Today's beer can be found through four steps. It's 1) a beer, 2) an ale, 3) a pale ale, 4) an American pale ale. To make things more complicated, you could even say it's a "hazy" pale ale, though that particular nomenclature is usually used for IPAs exclusively, not pale ales. But, the difference between pale ales and Indian pale ales are somewhat arbitrary, left up to the brewer. I'm sure that Attic Brewing Co. chose "pale ale" for Bad Nina because they are already brewing like eight other IPAs. Also, the ABV% at 5.2 % is a little low for an IPA.
So... you can see how this can get messy, and not even a flow chart like this is necessarily cut-and-dry. Still, hopefully next time you go to a beer store and find an "eisbock" and wonder what the fuck that is, maybe you can consult the chart. Or you can just crack it open and drink it like a good little beer drinker. Thatta boy.
