Yearlong Song Challenge, Day 72: Nate

Prompt: "A song about a hole"

Selected by Nate

"The Black Hole Understands"
Cloud Nothings
The Black Hole Understands, 2020

A cherished memory about black holes: going to Gilson's apartment in West Chester, PA, to play some songs on the guitar and, eventually, rewatch Interstellar. There are only so many ways modern culture allows two men to bond in friendship and fellowship, and rewatching Interstellar is one of those ways. Great guy, great flick.

A cherished memory about clouds: A few weeks ago, my oldest daughter and I laid in the front lawn and looked at the sky making shapes out of the clouds. I don't think she'd ever done that before. Felt like a Norman Rockwell painting. Did this activity also fill me with existential dread over the future of our planet? No way to know for sure!

A cherished memory about nothing: A few years back one of my kids woke me up at 3:30 in the morning and to get them back to sleep I had to wear them in the Björn on my chest. So I walked around my neighborhood at twilight with a sleeping baby on my chest, then finished reading the last 50 pages of Smiley's People before the rest of my family woke up.

A cherished memory about Cloud Nothings: They played at the first Made in America festival as part of what appeared to be a last-minute, hastily-added alt-rock skatepark stage right in the middle of the damn parkway. Me and maybe 35 other people watched the band rip through most of Attack on Memory at three in the afternoon while Kirko Bangs or whoever honked overhead. Weird concert, thrilled I got to see it. Pujol was there, too.

A cherished memory about understanding: My wife helped me buy a blazer the other day despite my public hatred of my own body. She was chill about it.
