The Main Thing, Sunny

This album reminded me of a stew—delicious but probably not my favorite for summer quarantine. It's not the worst from the slate of indie-rock albums we've been listening to. The album has a few stylistic poles: a Massive Attack-y trip indie rock to a more mainstream '00s indie rock to a more rock-indie or just jam band rock-rock. There's enough cohesion in the songs that it's not jarring while keeping it interesting. It shows that they stretched their arms a bit on the songwriting. But it also left me without a single standout track I want to throw into a future playlist. The singles are probably the closest, or maybe the instrumental tracks.

The lyrics are perfectly inoffensive. Quoting Genius for the "The Main Thing": "'The Main Thing' is my attempt at writing an inspirational anthem for anyone who’s ever been in an existential crisis... specifically, me. [...] It might be corny to say, but it really is important to be true to who you are and do what you believe in, whatever that may be."

I'm very happy for Real Estate, but I also roll my eyes, maybe involuntarily.

3/5
