Microshift, Gilson
It wasn't a divorce, really. But it sure felt like it. Six years together, four years living together. When things like that end, you tend to wonder how you can keep going, how things are going to be okay. At first, you have no fucking idea what you are doing, but things tend to come in to focus. This record feels like that.
The weird vocal beat at the beginning of the record feels a little off putting, sure. But things settle in. It becomes clear early that this is a triumphant record. Not in the Japandroid sense of triumphant, but in the more personal sense. The “we are going to be okay” sense. That is a triumph in itself, when you realize that things are just going to be okay.
In the song "Opener," the singer tells us “It's hard to find a better word or you can candy-coat your shortcomings / And press them till they're hidden from the world or just let it roll out.” Then continues to plead with us to just let it roll out. Just let it all roll out.
After my breakup, I started therapy for the first time in my life. It’s not miraculous, because talking to someone is not a miracle. But it’s been a life-changingly beautiful experience. We should all let it roll out. Especially now, with all the stress each and every one of us is going through. Times are hard. Even after a break up though, I find a lot of solace in the words of "Ullswater."
"Oh, one day you'll forget
That I'll always love you
It's still the last thing I'll say
I know it's the last thing I do
So stay strong."
We don't have to always be in love with everyone. It’s alright to fall out of love. But we should still try to love everyone, regardless. Don’t let those special people forget that you love them. Even if they are gone. Offer up some love some time.
The album ends with a petition to wait. Things will get better. I’ve spent a long time believing the opposite. But they do get better. They will get better.
I’m sorry I don't have much critical thought on this record. It’s just the exact thing I needed at the exact moment. It’s a beautiful piece of music. And it fucking rocks, so I hope everyone enjoys it.
