I wanted to take a quick moment to shout out my wife, Pam. She's written reviews every week for the past 48 weeks now. It was originally out of obligation due to a birthday wish from her husband, but it really has been a sincere joy to watch her grow as a writer and as a music listener over this past year. I think at this point she might actually enjoy writing an album review every week?! Regardless, I'm just really thankful to have her as part of the Record Club family.
And so this week we honor Pam by having her pick one last album before things start to pop off around the K*** household. Looks like we're going to have another child before you read the reviews on Friday, assuming everything goes okay. Who knows what life is going to look like at that point. Who knows how far Record Club is going to fall on the priority list for a couple of its members. If this is the last time we see Pam for a little bit in this space on the blog, then I relieve her of her duties. She did well. I'm so proud.
Then again, I could just force her to write next week's review while she's feeding the baby at like 3 AM. Because I really like having her around here! But we'll see. In the meantime, let's enjoy a Pammy album pick. Check out the archives, don't forget about our taco goals, and then read on.

WHY PAM PICKED IT: Since her week is going to be a bit busy, we both figured that she should pick something that she was already familiar with, so that she could bang out a review early in the week and get it over with. She indicates that this was a big high school album for her.

READING SOME SHIT: Here's a short feature from 2000 about No Doubt on a very ancient looking CNN.com.
PREVIOUSLY ON RECORD CLUB: The Best New Artist award at the Grammys is the weirdest fucking thing. I never understood its continued existence. How can an artist who has already released multiple albums be "new"? New according to whose standards? I don't get it.
But No Doubt was nominated for the award in 1997, after their third album, Tragic Kingdom (Return of Saturn is the follow-up to that big breakthrough). I used that as an excuse to comb through the list of nominees over the years and see who was considered the "best new" at some point.
In 1995, Ace of Base lost to Sheryl Crowe (makes sense). In 1996, Alanis Morissette (whose Jagged Little Pill producer Glen Ballard also produced Return of Saturn) lost to Hootie & the Blowfish (makes no sense). In 1997, No Doubt lost to LeAnn Rimes. In 1998, Fiona Apple lost to Paula Cole. In 1999, the Chicks lost to Lauryn Hill. (Also: damn, that's five years in a row that an RC artist was nominated.) In 2003, John Mayer lost to Norah Jones. In 2006, Fall Out Boy lost to John Legend (but Fall Out Boy will get their EGOT eventually, I hope). In 2009, RC alumna Jazmine Sullivan lost to RC alumna Adele. In 2011, Florence and the Machine lost to Esperanza Spalding (speaking as not a fan of Florence and the Machine—who?!). In 2017, Maren Morris lost to Chance the Rapper. In 2019, Dua Lipa WON, beating friend of the blog Greta Van Fleet in the process. In 2020, both Maggie Rogers and Lizzo lost to Grammy juggernaut Billie Eilish. In 2021, Kaytranada was nominated (for his fourteenth album if you include mixtapes, tell me how that makes sense), but lost to Megan Thee Stallion. Finally, this year, Olivia Rodrigo took home the prize.
Happy listening, fam! Have a great week! Good luck Pam!
