Deadpan Love, Nate

The songs that sound like Post Malone struggle to overcome obvious influence; less statements, more contributions to the never-ending playlist of the Now ("Shook," "High Risk Travel"). The songs that sound like Frank Ocean also struggle to overcome obvious influence, but at least sound like Frank Ocean ("Strange Love," "Agreeable," "Artificial Irrelevance"). The songs that sound like Panic at the Disco suggest the long tail of Patrick Stump continues to run out of Chicago and into the streets of every city in America, which is kind of cool and forces me to critically re-evaluate what was going on with Fall Out Boy besides those post-Taking Back Sunday song titles and all of the Sugars who were Going Down.

Everything sounds like something. The remarkable stuff does this while also sounding like itself. The rest does what it can, and we find the differences where we need them, real or not. The mind is a powerful tool of which we have little control. Be careful.
