The other day a friend mentioned how R&B could use a comeback. I agree with this sentiment. The genre works very well for certain places and situations, and does well to set a mood which is fairly unique. Clay shows what the genre and adjacencies can do: smooth beats acting as spine for a pretty wide emotional slate in the lyrics. The music is good, but it's Clay's voice over the album that etches a groove.
The motifs are generally pretty heavy, "Deadpan Love" accurately describing various meditations on relationships of various stripes. The short skit (?) towards the end helps air some of the tension, a reminder of the separation of art and artist and value in parasocial caution generally. Caution in love, caution in life, all while continuing to move forward. The track with Saba is good fun.
