PUNK, Nate

Bill Hader has an anecdote he sometimes tells in press junkets about Lorne Michaels' reaction to his Vincent Price impression. It goes like this: Right before Hader was to do his first live sketch including the impression, Michaels pulled him aside and said "I like this, but why now?" The acclaim for this album makes me feel like I'm listening to a Vincent Price impression in 2012. Japan creates this album every six months. Why now?

As for the music: The sun is out, and with it the serotonin that makes pop music sound a little better and hit a little harder. As an album to emerge into Spring with, PUNK will catch a specific class of curious rocker who might look for this kind of spastic, explosive energy. "Teenage Dream" works, too, and plays better at parties. CHAI earns its capitalization, at least.
