I know I've talked about this trip on the blog many times, but please indulge me while I reminisce about one of the most beautiful and serene places I've ever been: Mürren, Switzerland. It's halfway up the Schilthorn mountain. To get to Mürren, you need to take a cable car from the base of the mountain, get off when it ends in Gimmelwald, and then take a second cable car up. The tiny village has absolutely stunning views of the Alps, it's completely car-free, and has some of the crispest water you'll ever taste from a natural spring trough. I would do anything to go back there for a week and spend my days sitting on the Hotel Alpenruh balcony with a good book, glass of Grüner Veltliner, and fresh alpine cheese.
If you take the northbound cable car from Mürren, there are two more stops. The first is at Birg, the launchpad to ski down the mountain. Also on Birg, there's the aptly named Thrill Walk. I thought I was "Brave Maeve" until I was shaking in my boots, walking along the side of a mountain over a glass-bottomed path. It was absolutely terrifying.
The final stop on the journey up this mountain is Piz Gloria. Out on the terrace, you can see the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau summits, as well as Italy, France, Germany, and Austria. The peak is 9744 feet above sea level, which is... insane! Piz Gloria is home to a 360-degree rotating restaurant, so you can see all the views as you eat, but most importantly, it has THE James Bond museum. I know, I know, you're probably asking "Why?" Let me tell you, there's only one actor who played Bond a single time and didn't come back—George Lazenby—and the movie he stars as James is On Her Majesty's Secret Service. It's honestly a fun one! I'm not ranking it along the lines of my beloved Daniel Craig movies, but it's campy and a good time.
The restaurant was being built as the location scouts fell in love with the spot. Due to the timeline, the movie financed the completion of the building, as well as the cable cars, since that's the only way the location is accessible (or by helicopter). While there, I watched a brief documentary about it, and it was fascinating! Bond World was cheesy, like any "museum" that focuses on movie paraphernalia, but I'll be damned if I didn't have the time of my life. Now, every time I hear one of the Bond themes, I think about my spring afternoon, surrounded by skiers and the most beautiful view in the world. Oh, and yes, you better believe I did get a Vesper with lunch, because I love nothing more than leaning in.
