Yearlong Song Challenge, Day 16: Zach

Prompt: "The song you think of when you hear the word 'emo'"

Selected by Zach

Dashboard Confessional
Dusk and Summer, 2006

Freshman year of college. 2005. The best friend of a girl who would soon become my girlfriend had been killed in a car crash on the LIE in Queens. I was supposed to go to a party that night; I made plans with her to meet there. As I left my dorm, lubricated with pregamed alcohol, I saw her walk inside, hysterically crying. My friend and I who were on the way to that party looked at each other. This wasn't any ordinary cry. Something serious had happened. What was it?

When we got to the party, people there knew.

His name was Anuj. I didn't know him at all. Where would he be now? He was nineteen.

Still, I went to his memorial service. It was sad. There were speeches and tributes. I learned things about him. But it got the saddest when the video montage started playing, and "Vindicated" came on.

Everyone cried. Everyone.
