Let the record show that this is a five-song EP and that any songs listed after that are not part of Record Club. I know no one reads this and that someone is gonna say in their review "why are there so many live tracks on this album," but I feel obligated to say it anyway.

PRONOUNS: Richard Edson prefers he/him/his pronouns... Moore too, and Gordon prefers she/her/hers... but let's focus on Richard Edson today... Spike prefers he/him/his in the movie...
ABOUT: Richard Edson a.k.a. Spike Koopa formed Sonic Youth all by himself in... nah, just kidding, this was Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon who were jamming together and decided to form a band in 1981. They met Lee Ranaldo that same year, and he was asked to join. This trio formed the bedrock of Sonic Youth throughout their 30-year existence. Richard Edson joined briefly in 1981 but was gone in 1982. Bob Bert covered the drums until Steve Shelley took over in 1985. He was the drummer until the band broke up in 2011. Other members include Mark Ibold (bass for the final five years of the band) and Jim O'Rourke (jack of all trades, 1999–2005). Moore and Gordon were married in 1984, but divorced in 2011, which basically broke up the band (Moore was cheating). There have been various solo albums during and after Sonic Youth. But not from Richard Edson! What's up, Spike?! He played drums for a band called KONK after leaving Sonic Youth. He also played trumpet for the Offs. A few months ago, he did the soundtrack for a film called The Projectionist, starring Richie Aprile and Steve Buscemi's younger brother(?). Sonic Youth emerged from Manhattan's no wave experimental art and music scene, and became one of the most influential alt-rock bands of all time. But we all know that the story of Sonic Youth points toward one thing: their original drummer eventually starred in the CLASSIC 1993 cinematic masterpiece Super Mario Bros.
DISCOGRAPHY: Sonic Youth released fifteen studio LPs and nine EPs during their existence. This EP is their very first release. It was followed the following year by their debut studio album, Confusion Is Sex. It's generally agreed upon that Daydream Nation is their most popular and most influential release, coming out in 1988. The Eternal came out in 2009, and stands now as their final album.

WATCHING SOME SHIT: Get it while it's still here! Super Mario Bros. [1993] on YouTube in 22 different parts, apparently taped with a camcorder on someone's TV!!!!
RECORD CLUB CONNECTIONS: This is the second cast member of the CLASSIC 1993 film Super Mario Bros. to be a featured artist in Record Club. Mojo Nixon starred as Toad in the film, and we listened to his album Bo-Day-Shus!!! a couple summers ago. You can read that write-up to see all the other Super Mario Bros. [1993] connections to RC. We will eventually cover music from every artist on this list—yes, including Gianni Russo, a.k.a. SCAPELLI!
MENTIONS ON THE BLOG: Richard Edson has been featured in at least three Film Club movies: Good Morning, Vietnam, Howard the Duck, and Do the Right Thing. The band that Edson drummed in (I guess I should mention them again) has been on this blog a bunch, including two Monday Morning Mixtapes (008 and 028), a Song of the Day, and a Summer Song Challenge pick (Joe Day 2), among other smaller mentions.
Also, I don't know where else to write this, but isn't it at least a little bit ironic that we are celebrating another addition of MARIO week with a band by the name of SONIC?!
