It was a toss up between this and the girl in red's "We Fell in Love in October," to which this is a sequel. In being true to myself, I did select the sadder option of the duo. Whereas she was falling in love in the prequel, this October is all about losing that love and seeing the month pass by like any other. She seems to be trying to reconcile how that shift could happen, from special to nothing at all, throughout the song. The last verse of the outro when she laments "always in the back of my mind, you'll be my girl" is a great sum of the ways that heartbreak holds on. It's hard to not look back with nostalgia on a season where you were falling in love and trying to navigate your way through it.
