HARK!, Pam

It’s gotta be challenging to bring something new to Christmas songs that have been around forever. That being said, it’s nice to listen to laid back, relatively stripped-down versions of these songs. So many Christmas songs stir up visions of plastic Christmas trees and wishlists (“my own dog, gone commercial”), but with HARK!, Andrew Bird conjures visions of cold wintry nights spent with loved ones (the true meaning of Christmas?!). Maybe that’s due to the Charlie Brown nods found on HARK!, or perhaps it’s the featured strings typical of Andrew Bird. Anyone else associate orchestral music with Christmas from participating in a decade worth of school orchestra concerts this time every year? Either way, HARK! may not make it onto any Christmas party playlists, but I certainly enjoyed this non-pop Christmas EP.
