Discussion — Week 318: Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson

Here's a space where you can chat about the album, the reviews, your weekend plans, whatever.

I might not have Wifi for a while today, but I'll turn on data every once in a while to see what's brewing in the comment section.

Thanks for being here on a Friday morning.

Sara, how torturous was it having to write a review on your birthday?

Who's gonna have the balls to say they still listen to anything but county

Sunny, your question about where you know Willie Nelson from made me think that I meant to rope his weed reputation into the conspiracy theory that conservative elites were holding back older country music. Yes, you know Willie Nelson as the goofy-ass weed-smoking guy! That's what they WANT you to think!!!!

Pretty good day of "this is fine." Would receive a solid B/B- average if there was a way to average 'em out.

Not at all torturous!

I really appreciated Gloria and Joe's rigidity in listening to the albums.

I'm gonna say ONLY country. But really I went through years of "anything but country" only to look back at everything I've listened to since growing up and realizing that I am a big country person. I'll be staying that way!

This was my first time listening to a country album, not just hearing something in passing. Glad it wasn’t “bro-country”!

Sara, was it really your first time hearing this album too?

Is this a common thing for RC? I figured people usually pick some their favorite albums (with the exception of Eve6).

For me, part of it is that I have the get over the initial shock of “what am are listening to” when it’s something outside of my current musical schema. Some albums I ended up loving were things that I thought, “what the fuck is this?” on the first listen

So I needed to implement a systematic approach for fairly listening to these albums

I like to let my reviews speak for themselves, to keep some separating between the appraisal of a piece of art on its own merits and how I personally feel about a work.

THAT SAID: Maybe it is the week I'm having, maybe it's the weather, maybe it's my default nature as a hater, but I though this here Willie Nelson record sucked out loud. Bad, stinky stuff.

@ Gloria --- I would say that the majority of the albums chosen (>50%) are known already to the album picker. I can't say that I've NEVER chosen an album I've heard before, but the overwhelming majority of albums I've chosen are new to me. A few others are the same way. I'd argue that works better, the whole "let's explore together" method, as opposed to the "show-and-tell" method, but over the years, I've also found it really doesn't make a difference, and if choosing a known entity makes people more comfortable picking and participating, then it's fine with me.

@ Nate --- Argument That Nate Should Write "This Stinks" in His Review If He Thinks It Stinks, Week #318.

This was my first time listening! Most of my country listens are female centric pop country from the 90's and 00's!

You just don't want to see me win and I respect that, Nate.
