On a winter week that gave us a gentle hint of spring, this album made for a near-perfect listen. It reminded me of when you're walking outside and spy a tiny crocus peeking through snow-covered ground—a little before its time, but bright, hopeful, and determined it belongs.
The natural imagery and indigenous-forward tones featured throughout welcome listeners to celebrate blended community and culture. "Buried in Teeth" and "Wild Eyes" give away nothing to suggest that this was an album written by a twenty-something in 2007.
Paired with her soft, ethereal vocal harmonies, and the organic treble of redwood flute, the acoustic melodies transcend listening to more of... an experience? Though it must be said—I will always be partial to fingerpicking and strumming. I find the scrapes and thumps in between chords so human.
This album, like Mariee's voice, is winsome, crystalline, and full of heart.
