As someone who is just beginning to skim the surface of the New Wave/Post-Punk genres, the Feelies made embarking on this musical journey a little less intimidating. Crazy Rhythms was enormously easy to listen to. Write-ups for the album cite R.E.M. as a band who has derived a lot of influence from the Feelies. I’d go further to say that I hear pieces of Crazy Rhythms in a great number of the bands that I enjoy—bands slightly after the era of the Feelies, and current-day music as well.
The layering and build-up in even the first minute of "The Boy with the Perpetual Nervousness" (the first minute of the entire album!) creates a really fantastic sense of excitement. The Feelies create a great introduction, which leaves them with the task of continuing that momentum throughout the album. And I think they did. Their layering is pretty masterful throughout, with fluctuations that held my attention. The Feelies left me feeling energized and a bit kooky... what I needed to kick off what is hopefully the beginning of the end of this year of weirdness.
