What a ride! As I sit in a Somerset, NJ, hotel room, regretting my decision (/excuse to condone my behavior) to not eat enough food at my high school friends' fantasy football draft, I am reflecting on what a truly wonderful experience our summer has been. I hope we all can look back on the future archive of this blog (as Blogger certainly cannot be lasting much longer), and enjoy each of our little musings and personal revelations. Much thanks for Joe's steadfast vigilance at the dimming flame of blogging; we are all better for it.

Sam: Day 31 by Maeve: "Edelweiss" by Captain von Trapp
My favorite part of this summer was daily reading something from close and soon-to-be-close(?) friends. This post features a greatest hits of beautiful aspects from this project: reference to high school, tie back to adult stuff, light internet research, and best of all, earnestness. Many people really stretched their writer muscles, and we're all better for it. Also, I enjoyed/hated Joe listing the singer from musicals as the character and not the actual person.
Pat: Day 73 by Bob: "Martyr" by August Burns Red
Fourth wall breaks are difficult to do correctly. One wrong move and you've got something too pretentious or cloying for me to enjoy. This post executed it perfectly, probably because the break was unintentional. It goes from Bob's essay about living your life to the fullest and his personal experience with ABR (which is very well-written on its own), to stunned disbelief that he's still 434 words short of the goal, to a Frost/Nixon interview between Joe and Bob. It makes sense that the best post would ultimately be a group effort. When Jenn chimed in with one, perfectly timed "What?," that sealed it for me. This was PoYB at its best: genuine, insightful, and very, very funny.
Pam: I don't know. I can't pick just one... I'm just really happy that I was a part of this project. I loved having something to read every day, and it also felt like a little community. It was nice "catching up" with people via the Summer Song Challenge project, and I appreciated reading all of what everyone had to say. It was real fun.
Nate: Day 32 by Maeve: "Not Strong Enough" by boygenius
Maeve's first of many posts on boygenius, this one here. I enjoyed a lot of the content this summer, but Maeve's personal track-by-track review of this album was a constant delight to me.
Sam: Day 85 by Pat: "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" by Elmo & Patsy
In a day where three people picked this song, Pat takes the cake with a eulogy(?) of a made-up Grandma mourned for her hard-living lifestyle but hubristic substance abuse issues. Pat and Joe consistently brought the heat in the creative category, and I almost gave it to Joe for his parody of all of our writing styles on Day 89. But I cannot forgive him for lazily re-posting something I had already written and made me think that he had wrote it. Pat wins, because that's what this whole thing is about, right? Winning.
Pat: Day 83 by Joe: "I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time" by the Third Bardo
Joe wrote 100 S-word rules and only used "shit" three times. Two times it wasn't even part of the main rule, just in the addendum! If Joe wrote a parenting book, I would read it. Pay for it? Possibly. Maybe "Used" on Thriftbooks. But read it? Absolutely.

Joe, as Maeve put it in the comments section, "reading us all to filth" in this post was not only creative but definitely spot-on.

Cheating a little bit because I know other people will reference Maeve's Baha Men post—truly the most surprising. I enjoyed this little anecdote from Lamson where his friend called him out for trying to harmonize too much. The post was buttressed by Joe linking to another post where that guy talked shit on Joe behind his back right to his face. These little connections (which happened several times during the summer) were always very heart-warming to me. I like the community we are cultivating here.

How many people actually wrote 1,000+ words (and also how many days we had repeat song selections!) Blog specifically, I loved learning Pat's history lesson about the Affair of the Queen's necklace during his "1000 words" post.
Sam: Day 58 by Pam: "Silent All These Years" by Tori Amos.
I was walking down JFK Blvd. past Love Park when the song came on, and I did a doubled-take. How refreshing and fun! Who is this new artist? I went into the summer thinking Joe or Nate would give me the best recommendations, but I came out Team Pam (with probably Team Dave in second). Honorable mention to Maeve on Madonna sampling ABBA in "Hung Up." Very surprising; can't unhear it.

The amount of classical music that was chosen!! Or even just soundtracks. (That one LoTR song was picked twice, which... how crazy??)
Sam: Day 14 by Pam: "Piano Man" by Billy Joel
I told Pam this in person, but I laughed aloud several times while reading her fictional dialogue with her parents, children, and husband when she tried to play a Jens Lekman song. It was hard to track this down because I didn't remember the prompt ("A song that probably was playing when your parents had sex to conceive you"). "Piano Man" by Billy Joel may very well have been playing when Butch laid Sue (ew), but I'll only associate this post with Willow asking Alexa to play "Mario Brothers Rap." Appropriately, when I did a real-life version of a similar idea, my daughter also asked our AI to play a song at the end. TRUTH IN COMEDY. Honorable mention to Stephan, who made me laugh every time he referenced that he is apologizing for referencing baking.

Sam had a good sex joke. Runner up is the concept of "sports magazines" (Day 4 by Bob: "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy ft. Bruno Mars).
Maeve: Day 81 by Pat: "Space Oddity" by David Bowie
Honestly, most of Pat's got me good, but I particularly liked his "Space Oddity" one, and also the explaining to aliens one... shockingly unrelated.
Sam: Day 53 by Bob: “Minutes to Midnight” by Linkin Park.
A couple of different heart-felt revelations from Bob here, punctuated by his mourning of Chester Bennington. I didn't know this singer had committed suicide, and I felt for Bob's own struggles and the loss of an artist he loved. Real stuff here. Honorable mention to Maeve's "After the Gold Rush" and Pat's "Danny's Song" both from Day 26.
Pat: Day 60 by Maeve: "Who Let the Dogs Out" by Baha Men
Maeve's story of a Baha Man-turned-rideshare driver absolutely gutted me. It sucks that the band got ripped off by a record label's predatory practices. But it really, really sucks because this guy had clearly not moved past it. Fifteen years later, he was still bringing it up to his Lyft passengers. I hope he finds peace someday.

I always like when Joe ruminates on his hometown, which is lucky for me since it comes up a lot.
Maeve: Day 50 by Joe: "I'm Not Getting Excited" by the Beths
Shockingly (I think) Joe's "A song with an emotion in the title" post about what makes him excited these days. It made me shed tears and I don't think I told him that. Well Joe, congrats, this got me good.
Sam: Day 63 "drivers license" by Olivia Rodrigo.
I mailed in more than my fair share. I leaned more into getting it done than focusing on writing. I was pretty burned out after Hershey Park with the kids, and this was all the juice I had in the tank.
Pat: Toss up between Day 62: "Let the Beat Build" and Day 93: "Rock Me Amadeus." Both took less time to write than they took to read.
Pam: Day 88 "Sparks Fly (Demo)" by Waxahatchee
Ugh, we had just returned from a day at the Philadelphia Zoo. You could tell that it was the end of the summer just in all the parents' eyes and tones with their kids. And then after putting the kids to bed, I was like... shit! I didn't even pick a song for tomorrow. And there you have "Sparks Fly (Demo)," found in my library when searching the word "demo."
Maeve: Day 91 "deja vu" by Olivia Rodrigo
Granted, I've written other posts more last minute and definitely drunker than I was sending this in... this one really feels like the bare minimum, trying to check a box.
Sam: Day 68 "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys.
As noted above, I haven't gone all in as much I could have. The few times I turned on the creative juices (usually on a desktop computer), I was generally happier with the outcomes. This one, though, I wrote in real time on my phone while waiting for my friend Aaron to meet me for dinner. It tickled me, and it made him laugh when I showed it to him.

I take an unwarranted amount of pride in my Music Producer trilogy. I wrote a bunch of dumb skits this summer for this blog, but these were the only ones that had anything approaching a continuity. It started as me almost posting the transcript from James Brown's 1988 interview where he was clearly high as fuck and calling it a day. Instead, it became my way of mocking things I find ridiculous about the '70s, '80s, and '90s, as well as the randomness of the music industry. And the mental image of a Bobby Cannavale lookalike doing an array of increasingly bizarre drugs will never not be funny to me. God, Vinyl was such a stupid show, and only five other people remember it.
Before I'm done, I'm reminded of a Beach Boys story. I know some of you (Sam) hate the Beach Boys more than anyone who hasn't lived on Spahn Ranch, but bear with me. Legend has it that while Brian Wilson was working on Smile, he heard the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" on the car radio. Wilson immediately pulled over and said mournfully, "They did it already—what I wanted to do with Smile." I bring this up because I did the exact same thing on Day 89 when I read Joe's own Music Producer sketch. He's better at being me than I ever was. No wonder the ladies at the Connelly Library never realized we were different people.
Pam: Day 66 "The Miracle of Birth" by Paula (played by Donna Lynn Champlin)
I liked my post about labor and childbirth. The song is so funny and having babies is something I could write all day about.
Maeve: Day 73 "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" by Taylor Swift
Hmmmm either my 1,000+ (more like 1,500 words) on Taylor Swift or my post about "Not Strong Enough" (Day 32) because it was "a song that was important to me last week" and it made me feel introspective and vulnerable.
Sam: Day 44 by Fisher: "Miami" by Against Me!
I'm making the strained connection here, because this was in fact the first song on an album. I very much love this band, and like this song. Fisher, innocently and certainly not needing to be up on this info, innocuously referenced that he wondered what this band was up to these days. Again, it's not like saying "I wonder what that Bills running back Simpson is doing in retirement." But I got a chuckle that Joe linked to the subsequent very public, meaningful, and well-covered gender transition of Against Me! lead singer Tom Gabel to Laura Jane Grace. I would recommend Transgender Dysphoria Blues (from, Jesus Christ, 2014... feeling old), a very seminal Against Me! record where Grace explores the transition.
Pat: Day 67 by Stephan: "Snake Eater" by Norihiko Hibino and Cynthia Harrell
Props to Stephan for picking a song—a song from a video game soundtrack, no less—without knowing/caring if a movie of the same name existed. Fortune favors the bold, and the gods of PoYB rewarded Stephan with Lorenzo Lamas in Snake Eater. To him, America is just another jungle.

Joe, I'm sorry but there is no way this art project is better than "Bohemian Rhapsody." I will stand by "Bohemian Rhapsody" being a spectacular song.
Sam: Day 73 by Dave: "You're Not Salinger. Get Over It." by the Wonder Years
I was impressed by everyone (except Pat) who actually took the time to write the thousand words. I ducked the exercise (as did our novelist). I appreciated Dave's the best with his shaggy dog concert experience at a West Philly house show. I've been to a few of these, and they've always sucked. It was a bit of wish fulfillment to read Dave's post; I could feel the sweat and fun myself. P.S., my write-up for this is 1,555 words—so I finally hit the mark!

Sam's faux motion (faux-tion) was so good that I suffered a full-blown flashback to my time in the Montgomery County Court of Commons Pleas. When I came out of my fugue state several hours later, I was holding a preliminary hearing to determine if sufficient evidence existed to hold my dog on charges of eating an entire bag of peanut butter cookies while I was out of the house.

Who is this Stephen Sanchez? Why am I so irresistibly drawn to this song? Do I hear a theremin? Doesn't it sound like a theremin? What maniac unironically plays a theremin in 2023? Wait, you're telling me that's a sample from 1968's "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro? Did CNN really name that the worst song of all time in 2006? Really? Wasn't 2006 the year Pussycat Dolls released "Buttons"? That didn't even cross their radar? Was the U.S. so starved for content in 2006 that dunking on a nearly 40-year-old song was considered a good use of journalistic resources? Did I just hear my sister shout a question from upstairs? "Pat, are you playing "Evangeline" again?" The answer is yes.
Pam: So much. Hercules and Love Affair. The Wonder Years. Black Pumas. Lots of bands to dive deeper into: All of Dave's emo music (especially My Chemical Romance) and Rush, Mountain Goats, Rise Against. And generally fascinated by other bands: Rob Zombie, GWAR, Slipknot.

Previously, I thought Rush—like most prog rock—wasn't quite for me. While the written word of Joe related to the one high-hat note employed by Mars Volta’s drummer in "Drunken Lanterns" was very persuasive and almost had me. Ultimately, I felt the song (like all MV songs) was masturbatory and boring. Dave and Neal Peart, however, had me going. More of this please!
Pat: Day 20 by Dave: "Surprise! I'm from Cuba, Everyone Has a Brain" by Dance Gavin Dance
Before I heard this song, I was under the impression that Cuba was a nation of eleven million distinct individuals. How wrong I was! I guess that shows what a capitalist, yankee pig I am. I learned so much this summer!
Pam: Days 32, 44, 45, 57 aka the boygenius quadrilogy by Maeve.
Maeve's love for boygenius's the record has made me want to go back and listen to it. I can't say it's changed my opinion about the music yet, but I will go into it thinking differently than I did the first time around.

Hmmm, Pam's review of the song from the Super Mario Bros. Movie made me actively pull up the song to listen. Also, I wouldn't necessarily say it changed my opinion, but the Masque's own Jekyll & Hyde certainly made my opinions about that show and it's lore much stronger.
Sam: I can't even find it, but Joe's post where he did all the songs from an album fitting prior prompts from the summer. You get ONE song a day, buddy. [Fuck, I found it... Day 88 "Major Label Debut (Fast)" by Broken Social Scene].

This is harsh, but I must be true to myself and the blog. I tapped out as soon as I saw that first text to B******. No way, man. This is something Michael Scott would've done. My soul cringes for everyone involved.
Pam: Day 88 by Joe (see above): That Broken Social Scene post. Just entirely too long. I gave up. Sorry babe.
Maeve: Where to start? Just kidding, I'm looking back trying to figure this out and I do believe I eventually read all of them?
Sam: Day 15 by Pam: "Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star Is Born)" by Barbra Streisand
The parents' wedding song was one of the worst musical days. I think there are worse songs than this one, but I was left most annoyed by this Barabra Streisand song. Maybe because "Shallow" is so good; maybe because I expect more from Babs. But I found this BORING.
Pat: Day 40 by Joe: "Maria" by Justin Bieber
I'm not writing this from a place of circa-2011 reflexive Justin Bieber hate. I like to think I'm more mature than that. Bieber is a reasonably talented artist. I've watched and enjoyed the video for "Sorry." I was content to live and let live.
But no, once I heard and dug into "Maria," all I saw was red again. I hate the concept of this song. We all know Mariah Yeater lied about having a kid with Bieber. Best case scenario, she's an idiot trying to make a quick buck. All things equal, not a super sympathetic character. But you won, Justin. You are vindicated. You suffered basically no hardship whatsoever as a result of this incident.
But that wasn't enough, huh? You just had to dance on this moron's grave and write a whole song about how she's a lying piece of shit. Forget that Yeater was already getting death threats before this song was released. Forget that she'll always be known anyway as "that dipshit who lied about having sex with a juvenile." Justin Bieber needed more. He needed to do a victory lap by publicly torching this lady for four and a half minutes.
Bieber claims this song is his "Billie Jean." In defense of "Billie Jean," that song at least has some advice: don't run around breaking young girls' hearts. This song offers no lessons. No contribution to society. It's Justin Bieber twisting a knife. Fucking asshole. Miserable, petty prick. Bitch-ass, spiteful douchebag.
Close runner-up are those Temu ads you get before seeing the videos on YouTube.
Nate: Day 47 by Bob: "Kim" by Eminem
"Kim" by Eminem sucks out loud, which makes it perfect for the prompt, but still.
Sam: I don't regret quickly banging out these posts, but I wish I wrote more from a computer instead of from my phone. I can meander and rethink stuff on a keyboard; on my phone, I'm trying to finish ASAP.
Pat: Not keeping track of these posts as I was reading them. Do you know how long it took me to find Sam's post about hating his old boss? Why did I start at Day 50 and go up?! I'm such an idiot.
Nate: Thinking that trying to write a novel would be fun.
Maeve: Not doing posts in more advance and then rushing at the end and not putting enough thought into some. Additionally, in hindsight I wished I'd written about a different song by Taylor for my 1,000 word prompt because she has a song with "1,000" in the title ("Death by 1,000 Cuts").
Sam: Day 3: Three people (Dave, Walter, and Pam) picked a Smashing Pumpkins song, and two people (Walter and Pam) picked the same song, "Today." All three folks were influenced by an older person, and all were given similarly misguided advice.
Pat: It had to be Day 44, when Stephan and I both picked "Be (Intro)," by Common, right? The prompt was "First song on an album." Any album. That's about as broad as it gets. This random Quora post I found puts the odds of us randomly picking the same album of all the albums that exist at about 1 in 10 million. Now it probably wasn't THAT unlikely, especially since Stephan taught me everything I know about improv comedy, baking, and love. Chances were always that we'd be fishing from the same waters. But still, that's trippy, man.
Pam: Day 44: Stephan and Pat both picking Common for the very broad prompt of first song on an album.
Nate: Day 7 by Joe: "Slumber Party" by A Great Big Pile of Leaves & Sam: "We Don't Need Our Heads" by A Great Big Pile of Leaves
A Great Big Pile of Leaves three [sic] times? In this economy?
Maeve: Day 23 by Stephan & Maeve: "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley and the Wailers
Stephan and I both picked "Three Little Birds" for "artists with more than four words in their name" which felt CRAZY to me—not just the same artist, but same song. I'm sure there's crazier ones, but still. WAIT!!! Today Stephan and Dave both picked "Pompeii" by Bastille... a song I haven't heard or thought of in years. That's crazy!
Sam: I did the math here, and was surprised by the answer. As of August 29, the Beatles were selected the most (seven times). They were followed by: Taylor Swift, Green Day, Bruce Springsteen, Britney Spears, Led Zeppelin, Kendrick Lamar, and David Bowie (6); August Burns Red, Bob Dylan, the Hold Steady, and Slipknot (5); and Death Cab for Cutie, Elton John, Beyoncé, Jens Lekman, Weezer, Olivia Rodrigo, My Chemical Romance, Red Hot Chili Peppers, & boygenius (of course!) (4). The takeaway here is that Maeve got too much flak for her repeat picks, but Bob, Dave, Pam, and Stephan (with three Kendrick picks!) are equally guilty of liking what they like.
Pat: Bob picked August Burns Red four times, but only 50% of these picks were actually IN August. If this wasn't suspicious enough, Dave picked ABR once in June. What does this mean? No idea, but I'm now an August Burns Red truther.
Thickening the plot, Maeve picked boygenius four times, including back-to-back picks on Day 44 and 45. Is it a coincidence that "boygenius" is an anagram for "U.S. goin' bye?" Yes. But if the United States collapses soon, mark my words: Maeve knew.
Sam: I promise I will. But did you read my screenplay?
Pat: No. I started, but never finished. I have not finished reading any novel since 2018. I should probably see somebody about that.
Pam: Yes! Of Course! I did, along with most of Joe's posts, usually put it on the back burner until I had more time to read it. Loved it. Waiting for more...! Also, to be honest, I didn't listen to all of Nate's picks because the write up was the novel and not about the song... I should go back and listen to them as I most often find a lot to like in Nate's musical tastes.
Maeve: No. Maybe I will now that I can continuously read the whole thing?

Sam: Since I posed this question and tipped off my answer, I will cop to appreciating Slipknot. Previously, I equated the band with Insane Clown Posse. That's most likely due to a Venn diagram of people I went to high school with. ICP/Slipknot were in one circle, which did not overlap with anyone else. Although I also can appreciate at least the culture around ICP, I can now say I understand the music of Slipknot more. I always acknowledged the range of Corey Taylor's voice, and I now can get behind what he's putting down. I'm not listening to albums anytime soon, but I didn't hit skip when the band came on.
Pat: I always appreciate a good slipknot, but I usually use two half hitches.
Pam: Absolutely. I've gained a greater appreciation from Bob's song explanations. This summer has made me enjoy hard music more!

How does one read Nate's novel? I need to know.
I'm glad you asked! The prompt on Day 43 of the YSC was a direct reference to the novel (for Nate's bday). On that day, he summarized the so-far unwritten conclusion of the book (so don't read it, it has spoilers). On that day, I also set up a tag, called "Peaquad," that is attached to every blog post featuring a section of this novel. So you can click that. But I don't know how to put the tag in chronological order from front to back, it only lists it most-recent-first. So you can also visit the 2023 Summer Song Challenge landing page and start from Nate's picks on Day 1, if you're interested in reading in order.
