Tell 'Em I'm Gone, 2014
I heard this song in 2014 while driving home from a funeral. A classmate from high school had died unexpectedly and I thought it was right and proper to pay my respects. That was the largest memorial service I've ever been to, and certainly one of the saddest.
I was recently talking to a friend who's in his 50s, and was shocked to learn that he's only been to three funerals in his life. There have been calendar years where I've attended more than three funerals. I don't know what this says about me, other than that I grew up Irish Catholic. My people love a good funeral. I went to my first burial probably a good ten years before my first wedding.
I consider myself a fortunate person. I've lost people I'm close to, but I've never experienced one of those truly devastating losses: a parent, a sibling, a spouse, a best friend. Someday I will, but there's no point in worrying about it right now. It won't change the outcome, and it'll make the time we have left together more anxious and less fun. As for my own death, I'll explain more tomorrow.
