this is what ___ feels like (Vol. 1-4), Sunny

i am reminded of many, many other bands, that i cant quite grasp, so much so this barely sounds like anything in and of itself to me. a remix of certain type of pop music from the last fifteen years. think post malone. think mid-naughts radio, one republic et al. think mid-tens nordic DJs. think soundcloud rappers, think bandcamp art house space indie. this is what false nostalgia feels like.

i read JVKE like 'juuh-kh,' as per the roman alphabet, but see the artist is named jake, pronounced 'jay-kh' as per the reba character, and don't know how to reconcile. this is what minor annoyance feels like.

i cant help but feel ive heard track 1 before, and indeed i have, from a 'hey look at this meme' moment, weeks ago, from a meme displayed from a pinterest app. this meme was surely downstream from tiktok, where im guessing this artist cuts their teeth. i am reminded of noah kahan. i am reminded kahan currently has a top40 single out with post malone. this is what cultural confusion feels like.

i note many of the tricks of the trade used to great effect to make the music palatable, for tiktok and memes generally. i see the hard drops, drum machine. the heavy reverb and vocal pulls (moooo oooo ooooooooooooon & back, snap snap snap). "ghost town" with the background echo voice.

i listen again, and hear within three lines jvke admits "[he] knows [he] sounds super cliché." this is what being too on the nose feels like.
