This Is My Blood: Workhorse Baltic Porter

Stray Observations
  • This is my second Workhorse beer this year, but I barely talked about the beer itself last time (spent most of that blog post talking about racism, go figure), so consider this a second chance.
  • Workhorse Brewing Company is located in King of Prussia, close enough that you could still call it "local," but far enough away that I've seen advertisements for it on CrossingBroad (THE sports site for suburb jabronis). It says 25 minutes from my house on Google Maps.
  • Based on this most recent beer, their Baltic Porter, I would probably take the trip out there if the opportunity presented itself. This, despite the fact that I know it's going to be a run-of-the-mill brewery, with exposed ceiling, long wooden tables, couples trying to keep their marriage fresh by splitting a beer flight, food from a food truck parked outside, etc.
  • I typed the above bullet point before realizing that you can actually explore the taproom in 3D on their website. Hilariously, there truly are exposed ceilings, long wooden tables, and a couple sharing a beer flight (with a baby stroller! ugh, I should've mentioned that cliché too!). The only thing missing is the food truck.
  • Oh wow, and they have a taproom in Center City now? 2401 Walnut Street. I did not know this. I would probably go check it out today at lunch if I was at the office and also, ya know, the world wasn't shut down completely.
  • Speaking of which, Workhorse Brewing Company's website features a statement about how you can still support the brewery even in these troubled times, but how the safety of the customers and employees and community is still the most important thing, etc., etc., anyone else tired of this shit?
  • I'm finding it difficult to support breweries during this time, though, due to the nature of this project, how I need to drink different beers but still drink fewer beers. Looking at the online store for Workhouse, I'm running into the same issues. They sell all their varieties of beer, but only sell them as four-packs. Very rarely will I be drinking four of any type of beer this year, let alone some generic bullshit from a KOP brewery. If they sold single cans, I'd buy 'em up.
  • I mean, okay, they sell crowlers, which is what I did for the six beers I had from Triple Bottom this year. I guess I could do that. We'll see.
  • As much as I complain about Evil Genius' naming of beers, I'm finding the opposite approach to be just as annoying. Calling your Baltic Porter "Baltic Porter" is boring as fuck. You don't have to quote Ace Ventura or anything, but at least try something original? Here's my idea: call it "Swimming with Horses Porter," because this is apparently something you can do in the Baltic Sea. No? Is that lame too? Okay, I don't know what to tell you.
  • I'm really going at it with this website, reading every page. They don't allow dogs. GOOD!!!!
  • So how was the beer? It was pretty darn great. It's a porter. I've pretty much fallen in love with this style of beer, so there's no way Workhorse could've fucked it up. Is it better than other Baltic Porters? I don't know. I'm going to have to buy like five different porters at some point and just drink them all week, to see if I can tell the difference.
  • I drank this in silence because it was the only time all day that my house was silent.
