Dacus, specifically, is fucking shit up in spades this time out. The heartsick-yet-in-love indie rock of "True Blue" flips the sad-girl shit on its face and presents someone who is, in fact, not sad at all, but so deeply in love they are dying from it (we may also need to pause all further use of the term "fuck around and find out" until we can understand its pathogenic excellence). Talking shit about Leonard Cohen makes me feel fucking alive, not because I agree but because picking shots at sad-rock icons on your sad-rock record is absolute baller shit. Get on her level.
Elsewhere, Baker namedrops King Solomon and makes a great "it's awesome to be smooth-brained" joke on "Satanist," which is both the second-best song on the album and something of a Toadies jack. "Not Strong Enough" is probably as amped up as this thing gets, which puts it squarely in the higher RPM of secretary rock. Bridgers continues to whisper and warble with lyrics that alternate between meaningful and overwritten depending on how much vitamin D you're getting on a daily basis.
It's closer to three EPs than it is the record, but there remain three to four near classics in an otherwise sterling example of the "sad girl rock" trend these three aim to upend.
