Malign Hex has to be what I come to the genre for. "The genre" being post-something punk or I dunno? Here, I get an opening track whose lyrics make just enough sense, but also are more, you know, gestural, so don’t need to make any sense, but, and, so, intense guitars come and swallow most of that out, except for key little earmarked bits that hang around like the "if anyone ever asks you" lyric. And then a closing track, which is an extremely, elongated, self-Pokémon bit, reducing all lyrics to just the name of the band itself. It's kind of like meditation? And in between is 30-some minutes of very fine punk/rock/catharsis/post-something music indeed.
