I'll Cry If I Want To, 1963
While I like attention in certain situations, my birthday is one in which too much attention makes me very uncomfortable. This is usually a non-issue, since my birthday is often overshadowed by Thanksgiving. However, I remember one birthday—I believe it was my eighth—where the attention was just too much to handle. The day started out great. Breakfast at IHOP with my dad, followed by a movie. The celebration could have ended there and I would have been more than content, but my parents had one last gift for me—a surprise party. It was a wonderful gesture, and I did feel very special, but something about the whole situation was overwhelming. I tried my best to conceal my anxiety and power through it, but was unsuccessful. I ended up pretending to be nauseous to go lay down in bed where I took a break from the party just to cry. I am fully aware that emotions are difficult and complicated, especially for kids, yet, even as an adult, I view my behavior as ungrateful and embarrassing. Not even sure where this is going or the purpose of this entry. I guess I'll just say that I'm not anti-birthdays, but please no surprises!
