Summer Song Challenge, Day 66: Pam

Prompt: "A song about a birthday"

Selected by Pam

"The Miracle of Birth"
Paula (as played by Donna Lynn Champlin)
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Season 3 (Original Television Soundtrack), 2018

I was going to go the emotional route with this prompt and pick a song about motherhood (because it all begins with a birthday) that always makes me cry ("The Mother" by Brandi Carlile), but let's keep it light and hilarious today. We'll save Brandi for another day. I think most of us ladies can look back and laugh at the fact that labor and childbirth are an utter shitshow (literally), especially when labeled as a "miracle." I think that's just to not scare women into never ever wanting to give birth.

Without going into detail, I will say that not only is this song so funny, but for the most part it's all true! Not everyone tears, not everyone has explosive diarrhea, but some semblance of the events detailed here happen in everyone's labor. Your own birthday was no different (go thank your mom). Unless, of course, you have a C-section, and then you just have a panic attack once you can't feel anything lower than your chest. And then as your guts are putting themselves back into the right places after it's all over, you have the worst gas pains you've ever experienced in your life, to the point where the nurses on the unit offer you a concoction they call "witches brew," which is hot tea mixed with ginger ale because they are so used to patients suffering from this post-procedural symptom.

I consider myself lucky to have experienced both. Why? Because women are the strongest, and it feels good to be a woman. Hearing and sharing labor stories with other women sort of feels like when the characters in Jaws shared the stories behind their various scars. You'll think "was it really worth all that for the miracle of birth?" Of course it was!! No, really. It was.
