There’s a version of this post in an alternate universe that finds me happy that I was able to participate in our democracy. That alternate universe ended on 11/9/16. Instead, I sit here, emotionally wrung out, depressed, feeling pretty helpless.
It didn’t help that, hours ago, trump pulled out from the Paris Climate Accord, against the advice of pretty much everyone else on earth.
It didn’t help that the Town Hall was for Pat Toomey, who has never attended a town hall meeting in Philadelphia, and that streak continued tonight. Instead of that coward facing his constituents, we instead asked our questions to a mannequin in a suit with a large question mark for a head. It was cute at first, but as the night went on, and the questions got more desperate, Toomey’s absence turned insidious.
I just wish we could go back in time as a country to a time when I didn’t have to worry about my family losing their health insurance, my neighbors being deported, my planet being uninhabitable for my grandchildren.
I know that showing up at the Town Hall and taking part in the democratic process is important, and I guess it’s better than nothing, but like, at the end of the day, I still feel like I did nothing. I still feel like we accomplished nothing tonight.
We care a whole fucking lot about our country and the people in it. It’s just fucking depressing that our representatives don’t care at all.
I’m sorry. This is short and depressing and I wish I could write more. Like I said, if you had caught me on a different day, maybe I would be more hopeful. But right now, on this dark Thursday night, I just feel despair for the future of America.
Love,
Joey
