Dislike

This argument may sound frivolous. It is. It bares no importance in the broad scope of my life, and if I'm being honest, I can think of a whole lot of other subjects that would be better suited for a PoYB-style argument pro- or con-. This is just a little annoyance that bugs me in just the slightest of ways. What better place to bitch and moan about unimportant things then this stupid fucking blog?

Facebook started out as a way to connect with friends. "Social networking," if you will. Over the past few years, it's degraded into a place where people can just throw up any random thought they have. Other people can then comment on the thought. It's just millions of people spouting opinions that don't matter. (I can include myself in this—I enjoy writing a "witty" facebook status.)

Facebook has made it easier for us to proclaim our "important" opinion by making one click to say you "like" something. Now people are clamoring for a "dislike" button. Four million users have joined a Facebook group to petition Facebook for such an option!

This annoys me for a few reasons (not that it matters, I'll remind you). First of all, is it really that important to have an easy way to express your dislike of something? I can imagine thousands of tween girls reading their boyfriends statuses: "[Boyfriend] is going to the strip club tonight."

"I don't like that one bit! If only there was some way I could tell my boyfriend that I dislike this without having to make more than one click or type anything at all!"

Furthermore, I say that the whole idea of having a "like" and "dislike" option in addition to an option to write a comment is senseless. I notice a trend that people tend to "like" something, and then proceed to scribe an additional comment explaining why they in fact do like this particular status.

For instance, when someone types, "OMG I absolutely love that band! Great status!" we can all assume that they do like the status. We don't need to read the comment and then be reminded that the comment was a positive one.

If the "like" button seems pointless, then a "dislike" button would only further a pointless cause. And it pisses me off.

Ahhh, but... fuck it. I'm not sure why it gets me so angry. If I got so pissed off about inconsequential things on Facebook, why do I spend hours and hours a week on the damn thing? To pursue my argument further would paint me as a hypocrite—and that is something I certainly dislike.
